PDRacer.com Updates

(this page discontinued, see newsletter for current updates)

5-19-2011 Since starting the website, I have had an updates page to indicate the new stuff added to the website. To try and service duckers better, I am replacing the updated page with a monthly newsletter that lists the new articles that have been added to the site plus other information to help promote duckers and their activities.

4-13-11 I am a dinosaur (not a T-Rex, but more like one of those big slow armor plated plant eaters), and while I hate change, figured it was time to come out of the cave and let go of the classic frame design for the website and convert over to a more modern style. I have done a complete re-format of every page on the site in the hopes that this new format makes it easier to find pages. Also I re-wrote & cleaned up many of the pages to make them easier to understand.

The biggest change is the new navigation method. Instead of the frame menu, I now have a site map page so everything is linked from that one page, or linked from one page underneath that - so that means everything is now within 2 clicks of the site map. I also moved many of the articles into new (more logical) locations, and also broke up some of the big pages into smaller ones that encapsulate just their topic. I purchased more server space and bandwidth from my hosting company, so I can now host a LOT more articles from duckers.

By the way, there is a chance that in exactly 25 years on Friday April 13, 2036 the earth could get hit by the Apophis asteroid. Many scientists think it will just pass, while some think it will hit, which could destroy large parts of the planet and it's inhabitants. So… just to be on the safe side, I am going to do a bunch of sailing between now and then. Figure it is better to live today, because tomorrow might not come.

4-4-11 I got a report from someone who attended John Bridges's hatch event, they said it was a BLAST!! They had a really fun time building together, and built 6 ducks together. I am coercing for a more detailed report that I can post here on the site.

2-24-11 re-arranged the main menu to emphasize the member list and calendar, which are the main tools I am trying to provide for duckers to contact each other.

2-21-11 from John Bridges #512:     "The Friends of Yellow Creek" organised a Hatch on Saturday when 6 Puddle Duck Hulls were completed ready for each family to take one home for finishing. We will be repeating another Hatch of 6 puddle Ducks at Moraine State Park on 2nd April. Another "How to Build Demo" and possible Hatch is announced for the Memorial Day weekend at this same Park. We now have 15 Puddle Duck Racers finished or under construction in this area. There is, as of today, a promise of 25 to be entered in the 6th /7th August Regatta As in the "Ode To Puddle Ducks" we do have fun! [ link 1 ] [ link 2 ] [ link 3 ]

2-21-11 I get emails of interesting puddle duck related stuff, so I am going to start posting it here on this page.

11-14-10 rule explanation - is it OK to narrow the hull above 10" ?     Yes, and most of us already do that in the form of decks and cabins on top of our hulls. The rule is intended to prevent you from flaring out above the 10" line and creating external floatation.

6-21-10 Class rule updates:
It was suggested that since the bottom 10" was required, then above that the hull should be allowed to flare out or attach external sponsons above the 10" line. Rule 2 already says "The hull must have flat parallel sides, flat bow and stern transoms, and a flat bottom", but to make it more clear, the following rule was added:
2E -The sides and stern must continue to be flat and parallel, even above the 10" line, except for a gunnel or hiking wings (or other similar shaped extension) with the following restrictions:
must be above the 10" line
must be perpendicular to the side of the hull
must not extend more than 6" beyond the hull
must not be thicker than 1.5"

I receive continual questions about if it is OK for a keel to extend the full length of the side, or if the keel can extend forward or aft of the hull. Updated rule 6 to explain this:
6B - Foils may extend forward or aft of the hull, and may extend vertically above the gunnel.

Mast head floats are highly encouraged for safety reasons, but seem to be perceived as excluded, becuase they would be external floatation, so updated 5 to allow them
5A - Mast head floats are exempted from this rule, and are OK to use

3-30-10 added rule #7 - Don't screw with the hull shape
It was discovered that the Michael Storer OZ Racer Mk-II plans were intentionally made with a rocker shape that was not class legal, even though the web page that advertises the plans for sale display our hull shape, the web page guarantees that they are class legal. Storer confirmed that he was aware of our string line measuring system which was in force before his plans were created. A few others posted they too were intentionally modifying the hull shape.
We have clear rules to define our hull shape & how to measure it, the flaw seems to be we trusted everyone to follow our rules and we did not have any type of punishment for violating the few rules that we have.
Rule #7 was added, it stipulates that non-class legal boats must be allowed to participate, but specify they race with a delayed start penalty and their results are not counted (not shown on the score card). This is a compromise so that everyone continues to sail together, but creates an advantage for hulls that are class legal.
