8:30am, start of trip was 1/2 mile against waves and wind.
After 1 hour of tough going I got around a point and into calmer waters.
Heading for the island on right, it looks like a sandy beach there but it turned out to be gravel and mud. The shore straight ahead is
where I eventually turned around.
Beached on the island, I stretched my legs for a while, then back on the water.
You can see a line of Canadian geese just offshore of the island. They were plentiful and some were nesting on the island. I also saw a
pair of Ospreys nesting there.
I went on for about another hour and saw I wasn't going to make it to the Hwy 391 bridge and back before dark. So I took a photo
of the GPS showing 1.9 mph avg speed and 5.99 miles and turned around.
The wind calmed down as I headed back to Dreher Island State Park. I stopped for lunch for about 30 minutes. When I got back I
checked the GPS but it was blank, the batteries were dead. But I got back at 4:30 pm so that was at least 11.98 miles in about 7 hrs
of moving time for an average speed of 1.7 mph. I didn't make 20 miles, I think because the wind and waves for parts of the trip
made it a little too tough for me to maintain a good speed. I could probably come up with other excuses if I worked at it but right
now I'm just too tired.
