Why do humans like to compete and race?
Ever since 4.2 million years ago when Ardipithecus Ramidus was walking around, a human's daily life has been filled with competition, the results of which determine our future in a very serious way. So it is understandable why humans strive for racing & games - we are hard wired to compete, which is the reason we are here today.
Look around and you will see competition everywhere. Any time you see a game where points are acumulated or a winner is declared, that is competition. We watch competition games on TV (like football), we play games with each other, even "rock paper scissors" has leagues and national championships.
In recent history, many parts of our society are trying to discourage recreational competition, looking upon it as some bad cuthroat selfish persuit. I have always felt that it is enjoyable (and natural) to have recreational friendly competitions, and have taught my children the same. I also believe that winning isn't everything - the most important part is trying your hardest in a way that you can enjoy it.
It is about enjoying the journey, which has a purpose of trying to do our best. And with all the effort put forth to compete, who better to compete against, than our friends?
